Huka falls was enormous. And we do have video of it, but it's stuck on the camera that Ice can't figure out, so you'll have to wait to watch water flow.

It's run often by kayakers at between 40-90 on whatever the Huka scale is, and at that level it's about a 25 foot drop. Or close to that - metric conversion isn't really what we do here.

On the day we planned to run it, the 'ol guage was releasing at about 290. Uh, yeah.

We're told that people will hang out in the local area for days on end waiting for the right level (it's dam controlled, but the level still depends on rain), and sadly we only had that day.

We did hear a wonderful story from a world-class Canadian kayaker who said he ran it at about 160. Apparently translating "huka" into "foam" is fairly accurate - he said he disappeared and came up about 100 yards away from the falls, but it was like he was just softly floating under there.

Yeah, that wasn't going to be happening at 290. Running it at that level would be more prone to send you floating toward a cloud somewhere.

It's really beautiful to look at though. And if you want to run it, plan on spending a few days in the area.
